Worcester County commissioners on Jan. 6 approved multiple water and wastewater actions intended to address capacity and payment issues.
The board approved an intergovernmental loan for the Lewis Road Sewer Project and agreed to additional analysis, design and bidding services for the Sunset Avenue Relief sewer after engineers determined the original design did not account for flow being redirected from Assateague and Landings. Public Works staff explained they need to assess whether the relief pipe is sized appropriately and whether re-permitting and larger pipe and alignment changes are necessary; work is budgeted in the current fiscal year.
Separately, the board approved payment of a late invoice from EA Engineering for groundwater monitoring at closed landfills; the vendor had reduced the outstanding amount. Commissioners also approved over-expenditures in the Water & Wastewater Enterprise budgets to cover necessary charges.
Commissioners discussed coordination with Ocean City about available capacity to accept redirected flows and stressed the need to avoid future rework by considering capacity transfers in design steps.
