A resident alerted staff to a Maple Avenue property they believe may have been listed in the historic Green Book for Black travelers. Staff told the Historic Preservation Commission they had not yet verified a national Green Book listing and were beginning research that could include telephone directories, local archival sources and consultation with museum contacts such as Shoney Sellers at the local African American museum.
Jamie (staff) said the inquiry came from an elderly caller who recalled a Green Book listing and urged staff to pursue verification. Staff suggested possible use of an intern from a local college to assist with archival research and committed to following up with museum and community contacts.
Separately, staff reviewed mandatory training requirements for Commission members. Jamie and other staff said the Commission collectively must accrue six training credits each cycle (two required staff credits are tracked separately), that the city will cover registration fees and mileage, and staff will track attendance and report annually to the State Historic Preservation Office. Members were encouraged to reply to staff emails when training opportunities are circulated so staff can register them.
Commission members indicated interest in local and UNC School of Government trainings and staff said they would email schedules and logistics. The meeting closed after members moved to adjourn and staff planned a brief training workshop to follow.
