District schools report midyear academic gains and gaps; board asks for insurance and policy review on AAU gym request

Leaders from the Burke County Life Center, Burke County Middle School and Burke County High School presented midyear updates to the board, outlining student achievement goals, intervention plans and community partnerships.
At the Life Center presenters said they currently serve 54 students, with three seniors having completed graduation requirements and 10 more on track. Presenters reported that students completed 50% of attempted courses by the end of the first semester and said they implemented mandatory after-school sessions and credit-recovery efforts to accelerate course completion. STAR reading growth was described as above-average for more than half of students, while math growth lagged, with only one-third showing above-average growth.
The middle school principal reported a 10.1-point CCRPI increase over three years and a midyear reading growth strategy that showed a 21% gain over a half year in some indicators. The principal outlined strategies including visible learning practices, teacher professional development, reading challenges and community partnerships (including Augusta University and other local partners) to support improved outcomes.
High school leadership outlined a school-improvement goal to raise overall student achievement from 39% to about 65% by May 2026, describing targeted professional development and increased focus on EOC course participation.
Separately, the board discussed a request from district staff and an AAU coach for use of the Burke County Middle School gym for an AAU team composed of middle-school students. Board members repeatedly asked for a certificate of insurance and cited the need to review policy KG on community use of facilities; the board did not grant a final approval at the meeting and asked staff to follow up after review.
