Kent County issues three September proclamations for patriotism, preparedness and opioid awareness

Kent County commissioners read and signed three proclamations at their regular meeting, designating September 2025 as Patriotism Week, Kent County Preparedness Month and Kent Goes Purple, an opioid‑awareness initiative.
Brian Pearsall of the Kent County Office of Emergency Services told the board that National Preparedness Month’s 2025 theme is “Preparedness Starts at Home,” urging residents to make family emergency plans, build supply kits and register contact information in the county’s mass‑notification system. “This is an annual campaign…this year’s theme is preparing the starts at home,” Pearsall said.
Andrew Meehan of the Chestertown Rotary Club described Kent Goes Purple activities — a 5K run/walk, school speakers and community messaging — intended to reach young people and prompt family conversations about the dangers of opioids. Meehan said the recent Kent Goes Purple 5K drew about 150 participants and that organizers plan school presentations later in the month. “Our biggest thrust is to get to the schools,” Meehan said.
The Kent Goes Purple proclamation notes support from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and the county Behavioral Health Prevention Office and encourages businesses, schools and houses of worship to display purple during September to raise awareness and encourage recovery resources.
The proclamations were ceremonial actions intended to promote public engagement and awareness; they do not create binding policy or allocate new funding.
