Kent County wins $6.2 million federal appropriation for Millington wastewater project

Joanne, Kent County’s grant writer, told the commissioners that Kent County has been selected to receive a federal appropriation of $6,200,000 to support construction at the Millington Wastewater Treatment Plant. At the podium she said the award has been officially signed into law and noted it was the single largest wastewater appropriation among the 72 awards made nationally this cycle.
Joanne said the federal award does not cover the entire project; county staff noted the appropriation represents roughly one‑third of the estimated project cost and that a Community Development Block Grant application with the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (CDBG) is still pending for up to $800,000. She also said Congressman Harris indicated he might support a second earmark in the next federal fiscal year.
Commissioners praised the grant‑writing work and described the appropriation as a major step toward advancing the Millington project; staff said the award will be combined with other local, state and developer resources as the project is planned and scoped.
Next steps include continued coordination with the state CDBG program, engineering and budgeting work, and additional outreach to congressional offices for potential further federal support.
