The Berkeley School District 87 Board approved its tentative budget for fiscal year 2026 and established Monday, Sept. 22, 2025, as the date for the required public hearing.
Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations presented a summary of projected revenues and expenditures and warned that state evidence-based funding and some categorical reimbursements remain uncertain until official allocations are released. The staff also noted that special-education tuition rates have not been finalized by the cooperative and that property tax second-installment timing from Cook County may be delayed, potentially affecting cash flow.
Finance staff flagged preliminary reductions in several grants compared with last year. The transcript describes roughly a $200,000 reduction in Title I funding for the district compared with the prior year and described Title II (professional development, recruitment and retention) as previously put on hold but recently reported as possibly being released. Administration emphasized contingency planning and monitoring of allocations.
The board directed the assistant superintendent of finance and operations to publish the required notice of public hearing and to display the tentative budget at the administrative center in accordance with the school code.
The board also noted the upcoming single-audit that will include Title I and National School Lunch Program grants; auditors are expected on site in August to begin that work.
