MPART meeting briefly 'hijacked'; organizers to restrict public link and tighten admit permissions
Summary
During the January meeting several unauthorized accounts joined the call; staff removed the accounts, planned to contact DTMB to investigate, and proposed removing the always-public meeting link from the calendar and requiring requests for access to reduce the risk of future disruptions.
Participants described an incident in which multiple unauthorized accounts appeared in the meeting waiting room and some were admitted in rapid succession. One participant said the meeting "was hijacked," and staff repeatedly removed the accounts as they appeared.
Kelly, MPART staff, recommended removing the recurring live link from the public calendar and instead providing links on request: "If people want a link to the meeting, they can contact Kelly and get a link to the meeting and she can send it to them. That way, it's not out there in cyberspace for somebody to pick up and hijack us again."
Members discussed limiting who can admit participants from the waiting room (suggested: restrict admittance to Kelly and leadership) and checking email login histories and passwords to reduce the chance that an account was compromised. MPART staff said they would contact the state DTMB helpdesk to see whether the source could be tracked.
No formal policy change was voted, but members agreed to stop posting the live link publicly and to implement a more restrictive admitting process while staff follow up with DTMB.
