Committee hears bill to let active-duty service members request special license plates

The committee considered Senate Bill 532, which would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to permit active-duty military members to request special registration plates that display a vignette for their branch of service.
Nick Haas, legislative director for Senator Cherry, told the committee the change would mirror the existing process for former service members and National Guard/reserve members and said the Department of Defense lists more than 4,500 active-duty Michiganders. He said the application would include permission from an applicant's unit commander, modeled on language used in other states.
Members asked technical questions about verification and revocation: Representative Brock asked whether the license bureau would accept a DD-214 and how verification would occur; Representative Frisbie asked whether a plate would be revoked upon a dishonorable discharge. Haas replied the current draft requires unit-commander endorsement and that the bill does not, in its present form, specify plate-return procedures for later-revoked eligibility.
The Department of State filed a card supporting the bill but did not testify in person. Committee members did not vote on the bill during today’s session.
