Committee advances bill to designate segments of M-60 in Jackson County as memorial highways

Representative Lightner testified in support of House Bill 50 89, which would designate three separate segments of M-60 in Jackson County as memorial highways honoring groups and individual veterans.
"This is a super easy 1," Representative Lightner said, describing the proposal and listing the specific dedications: a segment named the Donald Wheeler Memorial Highway to honor Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans; a second segment honoring Vietnam War veterans Timothy Ballinger, Robert Jenks and James Morgan; and a third segment honoring World War II veterans Linford Graham, Melvin King and Vernon Smalley. Lightner told the committee the Concord Pulaski Memorial American Legion Auxiliary 81 has already raised funds for the roadway signs and that county coordination on the designations has already occurred.
A card noting the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) neutral position was read into the record before Representative Nyar moved to report the bill with recommendation. The clerk called the roll and the chair announced the motion passed with 15 ayes and 0 nays, and House Bill 50 89 was reported with recommendation.
The committee took no further substantive public testimony on the measure and proceeded to other business before adjourning. The bill will move forward in the legislative process per standard procedures.
