The House Transportation Infrastructure Committee on the record reported Senate Bill 70 with recommendation after Representative Wirtz read testimony supporting the measure.
Wirtz, testifying on behalf of Senator Bellino, said the bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate a portion of M-34 in Hillsdale County between Pioneer Road and South Pittsford Road as the "Deputy Sheriff William Butler Junior Memorial Highway." He told the committee that Deputy Butler was an Iraq War veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and later served 12 years with the Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office. Wirtz described Butler's death after an assailant produced a firearm during a traffic stop on June 27, 2024, and said Butler was survived by his wife Sarah, five children and two grandchildren.
"I attended his funeral with my mother," Wirtz said. "His funeral was simply put that, an outpouring thousands of people that came from around the state to remember Bill and his life." Wirtz asked for the committee's support and the committee heard one supporting card from Matt Saxton of the Michigan Sheriffs Association.
Representative Wirtz moved to report the bill with recommendation and the clerk called the roll. The motion passed on a recorded vote of 15 yeas, 0 nays. The committee recorded the measure as reported out for further consideration by the full House.
