McCain also outlined comprehensive literacy grants (a $307,307 award for curriculum and supplies and $121,507.75 for the first quarter of salaries for a coordinator and two coaches) and bus rental fees totaling $136,760 tied to two new contractor buses.
On procurement, the district completed an RFP for student nutrition management with two respondents and recommended awarding the contract to Southwest Food Service (appears in materials as Southwest Food Service/Southwest Food Excellence). Hawkins described the change as a move toward more scratch cooking and improved cafeteria experience; administration said current food‑service employees would remain employed under the new management structure.
The board also approved revisions to fleet contracts (Cliff BusLine and Montoya Transportation) to add rental‑fee language and allow rental fees to be paid either upfront or amortized across 12 months.
McCain emphasized fiscal pressures from recent federal freezes on Title funds and noted the district will reallocate operational dollars to cover some maintenance needs previously supported by SB 9 funds. The board approved the entire consent agenda by motion and voice vote.
