SAGINAW — The Saginaw Parks Board authorized up to $230,000 from available park bond funds to proceed with bids for a full replacement of the recreation center roof after hearing that the roof has exceeded its expected lifespan and has caused interior water damage.
Jared Kurzky briefed the board on the building’s condition and cost estimates, saying the roof is “well over 20 years old” and that earlier replacement quotes ran in the roughly $202,000 to $226,000 range for more than 16,000 square feet. Kurzky told the board the parks bond fund balance was $535,665 and said staff would seek additional quotes because the existing estimates have expired.
Board members discussed whether insurance could offset costs, the potential impact on other projects funded from the bond (including a playground at the Switchyard and electrical pedestals), and options for sharing costs with Public Works. The board voted to approve funds not to exceed $230,000 so staff can secure updated bids and return with a recommended contractor; the item will also proceed to city council for final approval as required.
Next steps: staff will collect updated bids and vendor qualifications, evaluate them for price and experience, and return to the board and then council for final authorization and contract award.
