Board approves limited schools of choice, adopts new K–4 math program and confirms hires, tenure and retirements

The Livonia Public Schools Board of Education on Feb. 23 approved a set of instructional and personnel items including limited schools of choice for 2026–27, adoption of a new K–4 mathematics program, hiring recommendations, tenure acknowledgements and retiree resolutions.
Trustee Liz Jarvis moved to participate in limited schools of choice under sections 105 and 105c for the 2026–27 school year, allowing at least one seat per kindergarten–sixth grade and a maximum of 125 total seats across the district. Mrs. Keats clarified families accepted under Schools of Choice are responsible for transportation unless they become resident students later.
"If they move into our boundaries within LPS they would be a resident student. Therefore, transportation would apply at that time," Keats said.
On curriculum, the board approved the purchase of Bridges Mathematics, third edition, for kindergarten through grade 4 from Math Learning Center for $442,306.80. Mrs. O’Brien said the district conducted a multi‑year review and pilot and that the selection was unanimous among the pilot team; the purchase includes teacher guides, manipulatives, professional development and two years of student journals. District staff said funding will come from the elementary textbook budget, supported by the Wayne County enhancement millage and a Wayne County grant used for piloting and materials updates.
On personnel matters, the board accepted recommendations to offer employment to a slate of teachers for the 2025–26 year (positions focus on special education and social work) and formally granted tenure to Kimberly Venable (effective Feb. 9, 2026) and Jacqueline Walker (effective Feb. 10, 2026). Trustees also adopted resolutions of appreciation for five retirees whose combined service totaled 137.8 years across multiple roles.
All instructional and personnel motions were approved by roll call. Board members noted the curricular adoption will be supported with professional development beginning in May and continuing into next school year to ensure teachers are prepared to implement the new program in September.
