The Forest Lake Parks and Recreation Commission opened its first regular meeting by administering oaths of office to newly appointed commissioners and electing leadership for the calendar year.
Kyle Young, the city’s parks and recreation coordinator, led the swearing-in ceremony as each commissioner repeated the pledge to "support the constitution of The United States" and serve "to the best of my judgment and ability." After roll call, the commission moved to approve the meeting agenda and proceed with officer elections.
Jolene Cheick, city clerk, told commissioners that an amended ordinance approved by the city council in August 2024 requires the commission to "nominate and elect a chair and a vice chair" at the first regular meeting of the year. Karen Morehead nominated Don Tyson for chair; Aaron Eckert seconded the nomination and the commission approved it by voice vote. Commissioners then nominated and approved Karen Morehead as vice chair.
The elections were procedural and unanimous by voice vote; Don Tyson took the chair and led the remainder of the meeting. The new leadership will coordinate meeting agendas and serve as liaisons to staff and the city council as the commission begins work on policy and master-plan tasks.
The commission adjourned at the end of the session after completing introductions, administrative items and staff briefings. The next regular meeting will include staff presentations on Manor Park rehabilitation and other capital items.
