County staff recommended a budget amendment to expedite repairs to Cove Square following a vehicle crash that caused substantial building damage and a subsequent fire.
Staff said a preliminary insurance adjuster estimate placed the overall repair cost at about $500,000 and that the maintenance department had vendor estimates ready to begin work. "We are recommending in order to expedite the repairs and get those square back to operational status... we recommend approving this budget," staff told the board.
Maintenance and facilities staff described immediate emergency work already completed: temporary wiring repairs, temporary lighting, inventory and salvage operations, and mitigation tasks. A licensed contractor—identified in the meeting as Dale Simpson—has been engaged for initial stabilization and vendors have outstanding invoices for emergency services performed over several days.
Staff told the board that NCACC (the county’s third-party administrator) and the county’s insurance carrier would pursue recovery from the at-fault driver’s insurer but that the county’s policy would cover repairs if recovery is delayed. Commissioners requested documentation of maintenance hours and receipts to support reimbursement claims.
Next steps: staff recommended and sought approval for a budget amendment to permit immediate vendor payments and to track hours and expenses for insurance reimbursement and accounting.
