Orange County Board urges screenings as it recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Orange County Board of Supervisors formally recognized October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Oct. 22, with elected leaders and health-care professionals urging residents to schedule routine screenings and to take advantage of local services.
"The month of October is celebrated worldwide," Supervisor Katrina Foley said as she introduced medical guests and survivors to the dais, adding that the county recorded 354 breast-cancer deaths in 2023 and stressing that early detection saves lives. Vice Chair Doug Chaffee and other supervisors echoed the emphasis on screening, prevention and survivor support.
Medical representatives at the meeting included staff from Hoag Women’s Health Center, MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center and CalOptima. Dr. CK, a senior public-health representative who identified as a survivor, noted updated screening guidance and recommended starting screening at age 40 for average-risk people, with earlier testing for those with a family history.
The board’s recognition included plaques and a photo opportunity with health-care partners. Supervisors highlighted county efforts to reach underserved communities and thanked local providers and programs that offer low- or no-cost screening and treatment.
The board did not adopt a policy or new funding in connection with the recognition; the item was ceremonial and intended to raise awareness and encourage residents to pursue preventive care.
