Tiny-home advocates urge Simi Valley to allow movable tiny homes as ADUs

At the Feb. 24 meeting, Ben Davis, president of Piccolo Tiny Homes, urged the City Council to adopt an ordinance that would permit movable tiny homes as accessory dwelling units (ADUs). Davis said his product is built to residential standards, inspected by third parties and can help seniors, young adults and homeowners seeking alternatives to expensive traditional construction.
"We don't want RVs," Davis said, urging an ordinance to distinguish tiny homes by construction materials, concealed undercarriages and proper utility connections. He cited about 22 California municipalities that have adopted movable tiny-home ordinances.
Council members thanked Davis, noted the difference between RVs and tiny homes is critical and said staff has a memo on tiny homes that will be circulated; Council Member Ayala and others said distinguishing construction standards and ensuring code compliance would be key to any local policy.
No formal action was taken; staff said a tiny homes memo was on the city manager's desk and would be circulated to Council.
