Roanoke Council approves consent agenda, multiple grant acceptances and ordinances

At its Sept. 3 meeting, Roanoke City Council approved a multi‑item consent agenda and took roll‑call votes on several grant acceptances and associated budget ordinances.

The council approved a resolution authorizing acceptance of a victim‑witness assistance grant from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and enacted a budget ordinance to appropriate those FY24–FY25 grant funds. The clerk read the resolution title and, after no discussion, the roll call recorded unanimous votes in favor.

Council also enacted an ordinance to appropriate funding tied to establishing a DMV Select office in Roanoke (funding flowed from U.S. Department of Transportation through the Commonwealth/DMV), approving the ordinance by roll call. On transportation infrastructure, council approved an ordinance allowing a bus‑shelter encroachment requested by the Greater Roanoke Transit Company (doing business as Valley Metro) at 3101 Cove Road NW; council members questioned pedestrian connectivity and the history of sidewalk requests near the site before voting to pass the ordinance.

The meeting included nominations and affirmations for multiple boards and commissions; the clerk called the roll to confirm all nominees and the council approved them. One council member disclosed a familial relationship to a nominee on the record and stated there was no financial conflict of interest.
