Cross Plains Parks and Rec to host free performances for Make Music Day on June 21

Parks and Recreation staff announced that the Village of Cross Plains will participate in Make Music Day on June 21, offering free performances and participatory music activities across multiple host sites.

Jill, Parks and Recreation staff, told the committee the event is “completely free to members of the public,” with host sites planned for Zander Park, Glacial Valley Park, the library and local businesses. Staff said the program will include donated participatory instruments — described as flower-pot instruments, Boomwhackers (color-coded PVC tubes) and handbells — and hopes to involve middle- and high-school students as well as community volunteers.

The committee was told organizers will target late morning into early evening to maximize attendance and that Zander Park’s shelter and electricity make it suitable for larger acts and rain-or-shine activity. Jill said some experimental interactive elements are planned, including a Makey Makey kit that can connect simple items (jokingly described as turning bananas into a piano) to speakers for hands-on demonstrations.

Staff asked committee members to help spread the word and recruit host venues and volunteers for the day-of activities. No formal vote or funding request for Make Music Day was recorded; staff said many supplies are donated through the Make Music Alliance and that the village’s role is primarily to coordinate hosts and publicize the event.

The committee did not take action on funding at the meeting; staff said they will continue organizing volunteers and logistics in the weeks ahead.
