Angela S. Penn, chair of the Equity and Empowerment Advisory Board, delivered the board's annual report on Dec. 16 and highlighted three priority recommendations: (1) programming and workshops to help students pursue higher education (FAFSA, community college assistance programs and college tours); (2) an assessment of housing opportunities and needs across the city; and (3) formation of a human-rights coalition to collaborate with businesses and nonprofits on anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
Penn noted the EAB consolidated subcommittees from five to three because of reduced membership, welcomed two new members (Deb Carter and Danielle Johnson), and provided a draft urban-renewal apology policy for council review. She requested council feedback by the end of the first quarter (March 2025) to maintain momentum on recommendations. Council members praised the EAB's work and encouraged a possible liaison with the schools for the poverty-prevention education outreach recommendation.
Next steps include council review of EAB recommendations and potential appointments to replace members rolling off the board; the EAB asked for consideration of new appointees and flagged interest in continued bimonthly meetings around the community.
