Spencer leaders praise volunteers, businesses and students as town prepares for parade and WinterFest

The Board of Aldermen on Nov. 18 highlighted volunteer-led projects, business-led meal programs and upcoming holiday events as Spencer prepares for its annual parade and WinterFest.
Mayor (unnamed) and several board members recognized Dionne Dixon and the new Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for organizing the Race to the River festival, which the mayor said was the largest turnout yet. Joe Morris, the town’s special projects coordinator, praised the volunteers who staffed the event and assisted with cleanup.
Mayor Pro Tem Secris recognized staff and citizens who restored the North Grand High School courtyards and thanked local restaurant owners Amy Ray of Pinocchio's and Quinta Ellis of Fleming Street Bakery for providing meals, often on a pay-what-you-can or free basis, when SNAP benefits were temporarily delayed. Tiffany Jones of Cool Knock and Salon was also noted for sponsoring families during the holidays.
Student Madison Gooch of North Rowan High School gave public thanks for materials and volunteer time the town and community provided to create a new courtyard space for students. Board members and the mayor encouraged continued volunteer involvement and cross-promotion through county event calendars.
Parks and Recreation staff gave logistical details for the holiday schedule: Spencer’s Holiday Caravan Parade will start about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, with multiple street closures and an early town-hall closure at 3 p.m.; WinterFest is scheduled Dec. 5–7 with volunteer needs; the Spencer senior Christmas luncheon is set for Dec. 10 (registration by Dec. 3, phone provided). The town is holding a volunteer meeting for parade help on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
Board members repeatedly urged residents to volunteer for events and said the town will continue to promote community events across regional calendars. Several aldermen expressed pride in downtown improvements and in the role of volunteers in sustaining town programs.
