Hamtramck council narrowly approves censure of councilmember after heated debate

Hamtramck City Council voted Feb. 24 to censure Councilmember Saeed after members raised concerns about his conduct and social-media posts. The measure prompted extended debate about whether censure was appropriate or whether the matter should be handled privately.
Supporters of the censure argued council members must maintain decorum and noted prior instances of formal corrective action. Opponents urged restraint, suggested mediation and said the language at issue might have been mistranslated and did not rise to the threshold for censure. Several members also emphasized the need to allow newly elected members time to learn council procedures.
During a roll-call vote read in the meeting, council members recorded votes that resulted in passage: four yes votes, one no vote and one abstention (transcript records that Councilman Saeed voted 'No', Councilman Chaudhry 'Abstain'; names for all votes appear in the transcript roll call). The censure resolution was approved and will be included in the council record; members expressed a desire to work together going forward.
