Summary
Council approved engineering and bidding for a DPS yard project funded by a $2 million 2025 MEDC grant; staff said the design contract will be paid from grant funds and that the city will return for final construction approvals after bids.
Hamtramck City Council voted Feb. 24 to move forward with engineering design and bidding for a Department of Public Services yard on Council Street, funded by a $2 million grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
Tiffany Newbig of Tennessee Engineers told the council the city received the 2025 MEDC grant and that the current action approves engineering designs and the bid package so the project can be advertised and constructed before the grant expires in 2027. Staff described the design phase as a small portion of the total and cited a design estimate (about $112,000) to prepare bid documents and an RFP package.
Council members asked about project history and whether general-fund support would be required; staff said the city will attempt to complete the project within the $2 million grant and avoid drawing from the general fund, returning to council for contract awards after bids are received.
Council approved the resolution to proceed with design and bidding. Staff indicated they will return with final bid results and contract-award recommendations for council approval.
