Board approves Troy Lake as Wheatland High School principal for 2025–26 school year

The Platte County School District #1 board voted to approve the employment of Troy Lake as principal of Wheatland High School for the 2025–26 school year.

Board members introduced and briefly questioned Lake, who described a long career in Wyoming education and plans to relocate to the district. An unidentified board member told colleagues the hiring committee was "really impressed" with Lake's experience; the board then approved the motion by voice vote with no opposition recorded.

Lake said he has worked in Wyoming for decades, including stints in Sheridan and six years in Cheyenne. "I actually retired at the end of last year. Thought maybe I was done 32 years in education. And then mid July, realized that I probably wasn't ready to be retired yet," Lake said as he described why he applied for the position. He told the board he had been principal at an alternate high school with about 250 students and roughly 32 teachers, which he said is similar in size to Wheatland High School.

Board members asked about Lake's ties to the area and his relocation timetable. Lake said he was born in Douglas, raised on a family ranch near Harris Park, and that he and his wife plan to move to the area; the transcript records a reference to relocating "by 25 quarter," a phrase the board did not clarify during the meeting.

The presiding member called for a voice vote on the motion to approve "the employment for New Wheatland High School principal, mister Troy Lake, for the 2526 season." Members answered "Aye," and the presiding member welcomed Lake aboard. Board members also advised Lake to check district email for onboarding items and said they would share a list of initial tasks.
