Commissioners honor staff, announce Peña Blanca community center funding and promote firefighters

Commissioner Joshua A. Jones publicly recognized Jamie Espinosa for securing roughly $1 million in federal funding to advance the Peña Blanca community center into a second phase after an earlier federal application went unapproved. Jones credited a congresswoman and Espinosa’s team for resubmitting the application and securing the award. "She has been working getting funding for the community center in Pena Blanca for over 2 years now," Jones said.

Jamie Espinosa accepted the recognition and credited her staff. "I couldn't do what I do without the staff that I have," she said, adding that much of the center’s work is grant-funded and focused on seniors, youth and underserved residents.

The commission also recognized a recent promotional ceremony in which two battalion chiefs and four lieutenants were promoted. The fire chief described the promotion process as competitive and called up promoted personnel for badge pinning and oath administration. Javier Galvan and James Pfeiffer were called forward and sworn in; during the oath, promoted officers repeated a pledge to "uphold the public trust" and to "commit myself to the safety of my crew."

Commissioner Meek thanked the families of promoted firefighters and praised the sheriff's office for progress on several cold cases. County staff credited communications and the sheriff's office for that work. The commission concluded recognitions and moved on to business.

Next steps: staff will proceed with community center planning tied to the newly secured funds and schedule public outreach; the county expects to announce a groundbreaking and schematic review for the resource/animal services facilities approved later in the meeting.
