Residents debate whether Luna County should expand Board from three to five members

Tris McSherry urged commissioners to consider an expansion, saying five members would improve geographic diversity and allow commissioners to better serve constituents. "It would give the commissioners more of an opportunity to serve their constituents," McSherry said, and pointed to precedent in other small New Mexico counties that moved to five-member bodies.
Opponents argued the county does not meet statutory population requirements and cautioned about the additional expense of two more salaries. Lance Renfro read a statement on behalf of Rep. Jennifer Jones saying Luna County "does not meet the population requirements" for five commissioners. Several residents also said the board should focus on local problems — potholes, junk properties, homelessness — rather than out-of-county proclamations.
Commissioners asked for evidence and more detailed proposals; no formal motion or advisory measure was taken during the work session. The topic is likely to return for further study and possible staff recommendations.
