Resident proposes first‑responder wellness program and seeks donations for Luna County cancer support group

Rosella Nanez, who identified herself as treasurer of a Luna County cancer support group, used the public-comment period to present two items to the board: a proposed first-responder and employee wellness service developed by Michael Calderon, and a fundraising appeal.

Nanez said Michael Calderon holds a BA in kinesiology and has worked with members of the community. She asked whether she could distribute printed materials about the wellness program to county officials and described the program as designed to reduce insurance premiums and sick-time costs by improving employee health.

Nanez also asked for support for her cancer support group’s September fundraising goal of $20,000. "For this month of September, we're trying to raise $20,000," she said, and described a target of 200 donors giving $100 each. She told the board that every $100 donated would provide about five trips to treatment for cancer patients and provided a QR code for donations.

Board response: A county official thanked Nanez and recounted a family member's experience using the group's services. Officials expressed appreciation for the work the group provides and accepted the materials Nanez offered.

No formal county action on the wellness proposal or the fundraising request was recorded during the meeting; Nanez said she is available for questions and provided materials and a donation link for board members and the public.
