The Bradenton City Council on July 23 adopted Ordinance 4054, updating the city’s adopted property maintenance standards to incorporate the 2024 edition of the International Property Maintenance Code and to add minimum maintenance standards directly into the City Code of Ordinances.
Volker Reis, the city’s code enforcement manager, presented the ordinance as a routine triennial update that consolidates existing maintenance standards into the city code so residents can read standards without requesting a copy from the code office. Reis told council there are no substantive changes to minimum maintenance standards; the presentation emphasized continuity with past enforcement practice.
During public comment, a representative of the Bay Area Apartment Association urged the council to ensure enforcement remains reasonable and to keep allowances for hurricane recovery timeframes in mind. Reis noted the city’s post‑storm practice: the code division typically allows a three‑month grace period for temporary coverings and repairs after an event unless there is a life‑safety issue. Councilmembers said they would monitor implementation and that the code provides standard enforcement tools for property maintenance complaints.
The ordinance passed on second reading by council vote (4–0).
