At a July 23 public hearing the City of Bradenton began the Brownfields designation process for the Tropicana site the city acquired, and later voted to annex about 32.39 acres of that property into city limits.
Travis Hearn, the city’s environmental counsel, explained that Brownfields designation allows the city to seek state reimbursement for eligible cleanup costs (approximately 50% of annual eligible expenses up to an annual award cap, with an additional one‑time partial reimbursement at project close) and provides regulatory liability protection if the city follows DEP‑approved cleanup plans. Hearn said designation also opens other grant opportunities to support remediation and redevelopment.
Planning staff presented the voluntary annexation ordinance (Ordinance 4061). The annexation was described as contiguous and compact and consistent with urban service provisions; staff submitted an urban‑services report and said the property is well‑suited for public‑works uses (sanitation, fleet maintenance and associated facilities) that would allow the city to vacate older public‑works parcels.
Council approved the annexation on second reading (4–0). Planning staff noted companion first‑reading items (future land‑use and zoning amendments) will return for second readings on August 13. The Brownfields designation public hearing was the first of two hearings required before council finalizes the Brownfields resolution and related agreements.
