County to apply for LDWI grant to fund DWI treatment and prevention programs

Los Alamos County Council approved a resolution authorizing a county application to the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration for Local DWI (LDWI) grant funds totaling $40,531.
Lauren Tomko, the county’s court program and DWI coordinator, told council the LDWI funds support treatment for DWI offenders, prevention and outreach programs including sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, educational events and community substance‑use surveys. "We are requesting $40,531 from the Department of Finance and Administration through the LDWI grant," Tomko said during her presentation.
Tomko answered a council question about last year’s award, noting the 2024 award was "just under $32,000." After no public comment specific to the item the council voted to adopt the resolution and authorized the council chair to sign the memorandum of understanding and statement of assurances; the motion passed 7–0.
Staff said LDWI funding is typically annual and used for a mix of enforcement, prevention and community programming; any specific program spending would be reported through routine departmental budgeting and grant reporting.
