County council approves correction to Blue Cross stop‑loss rates after audit

Los Alamos County council unanimously approved a correction to its employee medical insurance contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico on Feb. 3.
Community Development/HR staff told the council the original agreement (AGR24‑67) included erroneous premium rates in Exhibit B. The correct individual stop‑loss premium rate is $220.17 per employee per month and the aggregate stop‑loss rate should be as stated in the amendment; the transcription noted an aggregate figure and a net overpayment of about $14.71 per employee per month for calendar year 2025. Staff said roughly 572 employees are enrolled in the county insurance and that the overpayment was discovered during a routine audit of administrative fees.
“Fees paid in error do not affect employee premium rates, and Blue Cross Blue Shield will also audit and reconcile premiums paid in error. The difference paid will be credited to the county once the audit and reconciliation are complete,” staff said. Councillor Neil Clinton moved to approve Amendment No. 2 to AGR24‑67; the motion was seconded by Councillor Cole and passed unanimously in a roll‑call vote.
The amendment corrects the premium figures in Exhibit B for calendar year 2025; staff did not indicate changes to employee contributions and said the net overpayment will be reconciled with Blue Cross.
