Curriculum subcommittee backs accelerated request for Weston High Model UN trip to Harvard

The Weston Board of Education curriculum subcommittee on Jan. 7 reviewed an accelerated request for an overnight trip to the Harvard Model United Nations conference for about 12 Weston High School Model UN students.
Assistant principal Nick Torres said the team would stay at the Copley Marriott and the attached Sheridan Hotel in downtown Boston and that the conference activities are housed in those connected venues. He described the event as a “simulated … UN general assembly type of experience” and said the trip includes a walking tour of Harvard.
Tina, the meeting facilitator, said supplemental materials were in the board book and that the committee would forward the request to the full board for final approval. Torres identified Megan Kaneta and Renata as the chaperones; Torres also said Ms. Rolle, the club advisor, worked with students on preparation.
Committee members asked who hosts and facilitates the conference; Torres said it is run by Harvard students under the HMUN (Harvard Model United Nations) structure. Members asked how the learning would be shared after the trip; Torres said participants typically present to middle school students and may run roundtable conversations or library sessions to share takeaways.
On costs, Tina said this is an extracurricular, school-sponsored trip and that “all the costs are encumbered by the students and their families.” Panelists and members expressed support for the trip’s educational value and said they expected the full board to review and act on the request.
The subcommittee did not record a formal final vote on the trip at the Jan. 7 meeting; committee members supported forwarding the accelerated request for full-board consideration.
