The Pewaukee School District on Aug. 14 voted to add up to 10 open‑enrollment seats and fill them from existing waitlists to address revenue shortfalls caused by lower projected enrollment.
Assistant Superintendent John Gahan said enrollment had trended lower than projections prepared in January, though the district has seen some recent enrollment movement. "We have existing wait lists of students from the grade levels that the board approved with open seats," he said, and confirmed the district had checked with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to ensure the change was appropriate.
Board members questioned how seat caps are determined and whether caps reflect building capacity. Gahan explained the January recommendation is based on projected fall enrollment and a rule‑of‑thumb cap (roughly 10%), and that district staff review grade‑level capacity and use waitlists to maintain building balance.
The board approved the motion to admit up to 10 additional open‑enrollment students drawn from existing waitlists.
