Montebello approves SB1 street‑resurfacing contract; work due to start April–May 2026

The Montebello City Council voted Feb. 25 to award a contract for the SB1 street enhancement project (rubberized asphalt construction, Project 944) to All American Asphalt.

Public Works Deputy Director James Coiner presented the scope: remove existing pavement, perform grinding and overlay, adjust utilities, install traffic control, and replace striping and markings. Coiner said bids closed Feb. 11 and that, depending on the start date, construction is expected to begin in April or May 2026 with a projected completion date in October 2026. “We’re looking at starting the road construction improvements on April, May 2026…projected completion date will be in October 2026,” Coiner said.

Staff said streets targeted for work were pulled from the city’s pavement management system (prepared by Bauer Engineering, August 2025) and highlighted an effort to distribute work equitably across the city’s five districts. During construction the contractor will provide a minimum of 48 hours’ notice to affected residents and businesses and staff will assist with community communications.

Council members expressed support for prioritizing streets in poor condition, and one member noted the area near Montebello High School was on the list. A motion to award the contract was made, seconded, and approved by unanimous roll call.

Staff said residents can view the pavement management system on the city website for specific street listings and may contact public works for project questions and notifications.
