County awards HVAC replacement contract for pandemic building to Hurst Mechanical

Montcalm County commissioners voted Feb. 23 to accept a low bid from Hurst Mechanical to replace a failing rooftop HVAC unit at the Pandemic Readiness Building.
Doug Dietzen, director of Building & Grounds, told the board the existing unit will heat but will not air-condition the center portion and has experienced multiple refrigerant leaks. Repairing the evaporator coil was estimated at roughly $15,000 to $17,000 but contractors warned other parts could fail; the Hurst Mechanical replacement bid was just under $30,000 and included a five-year parts-and-labor warranty.
Commissioners discussed manufacturer support from Carrier, previous warranty coverage, and available capital-improvement funds or fund balance to pay for the replacement. Commissioner Johnson moved to accept Hurst Mechanical’s low bid of $29,981 with a five-year extended warranty; the motion was supported and carried by voice vote.
The board noted the replacement would provide a longer warranty than the original installation and recommended the county pursue warranty or manufacturer remedies where possible. Funding will come from capital-improvement fund balance or by deferring other projects as needed.
