The workshop opened with a series of special presentations and proclamations.
City staff read a Florida League of Cities press release recognizing City of Sunny Isles Beach Commissioner Jennifer Viscara as a 2024 Home Rule Hero for her advocacy during the legislative session; staff quoted Casey Cook of the League’s legislative affairs office and invited Fortuna Smucker from North Miami Beach to share brief remarks congratulating Commissioner Viscara.
The commission then presented a proclamation designating April 2024 as Autism Acceptance Month and thanked local advocates including Paz Soldaves and Sofia La Chapelle; the police department presented a chief’s recognition for Teresa Becerra and her son Robert for providing autism awareness training to officers and the ocean rescue division.
Additional proclamations included Jewish American Heritage Month and Education and Sharing Day; staff also presented a Municipal Clerks Week proclamation to City Clerk Bettencourt and noted the essential role clerks play in local government.
These presentations were ceremonial; no formal policy action was requested. Staff arranged photo opportunities and thanked volunteers and resident advocates.
