The City Commission of Sunny Isles Beach presented a proclamation recognizing National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and highlighted local screening efforts during a brief meeting. Commissioner Viscaro read a proclamation calling attention to early detection and the importance of regular mammography, citing national estimates read into the record.
A breast cancer survivor identified in the meeting as Mr. Nardi told the commission he carries a BRCA1 genetic mutation that raises his family's risk and described his volunteer work to expand access to screening. “The most important thing, I'm a survivor,” he said, and described organizing a quarterly mammogram van and providing Spanish‑language information to encourage timely screening. He urged participation in clinical trials to make treatments effective across communities.
The proclamation text, as read at the meeting, included National Cancer Institute figures read aloud by a commissioner that more than 310,720 new cases of breast cancer are expected in the United States this year with over 42,250 deaths. The reading emphasized annual mammography beginning at age 40 as recommended by national guidance and the city's solidarity with survivors and caregivers.
Commissioners thanked the speaker and noted the city’s ongoing support for breast cancer awareness activities, including the mobile mammography service referenced by the survivor. The presentation concluded with a photo opportunity and a reminder of scheduled local screening events that the speaker said take place quarterly.
The commission then moved to the next agenda item.
