Council approves transfer of seven lots for planned affordable-housing project

The council recessed to act as the Martinsville Redevelopment and Housing Authority and approved transferring seven lots on the corner of Beaver and Fayette streets to the West Piedmont Planning District Commission for a neighborhood housing project.
An EDC representative said the plan anticipates building 7–9 homes that would be preserved as permanently affordable through partnerships with Virginia Housing, the Harvest Foundation and the Virginia Statewide Community Land Trust. Staff said all transfer costs would be covered by the city and that approximately $51,000 would be available by late December to support site planning and engineering.
The commission will work with the Community Development and Public Works directors during site planning; initial build costs cited by the presenter (modeled after a nearby Heights project) suggested a lower sale price for buyers through land-trust structures. The housing-authority vote was recorded 5–0.
Why it matters: the transfer is intended to expand affordable homeownership options in Martinsville and use partnerships to preserve long-term affordability; council approved the transfer and staff will continue design and funding coordination.
