Martinsville City Council unanimously approved a resolution formally creating a Youth Advisory Committee and authorized the YAC to engage in fundraising and sponsorship activities.
A presenter said the YAC had been discussed in an August work session and had since won a Harvest Hope grant to support a Movies in the Park series; the draft charter specifies membership and selection processes and includes student membership from Martinsville High School. "In the resolution ... including membership in the selection process, just so that we make sure that we are legal and transparency and what that looks like," the presenter said.
Council moved to approve the resolution, the motion was seconded and a roll call recorded a 5-0 vote in favor. The adoption will allow the YAC to solicit donations and grants and to operate as an official board or commission per the draft charter. Staff and council did not add additional conditions during the meeting; next steps include formalizing the charter and supporting the YAC's scheduled activities.
