Staff emphasized outreach strategies, revised job descriptions and collaboration with departments to improve hiring timelines and retention.
On police staffing, Chief Robert Dunn told the council the department is budgeted for 220 sworn officers and currently has 179. "We are budgeted for 220 sworn police officers. We currently have 179 sworn officers in our ranks," Dunn said, and described steps to accelerate recruit training including tapping a Los Angeles County academy that runs more frequently and an incentive program to secure early retirement notifications to plan hires.
Khojabi recommended the council accept the report and direct staff to continue retention and recruitment efforts, a motion the council approved. Staff said detailed follow-up on vacancy classification and municipal code updates for recruitment will proceed through the meet-and-confer process with labor groups.
