Rialto council okays $250,000 to repair city-owned Kookas Building

The City Council approved an appropriation of roughly $250,000 to make immediate repairs to the city-owned Kookas Building at 119 North Riverside Avenue.
Staff said the funds are intended to repair the roof and HVAC systems while staff prepares a request for proposals to seek a potential operator for the facility, with consideration for compatibility with the Pacific Electric Trail expansion. The building has been city-owned since 1992 and vacant since December 2023.
Anna Gonzales of the Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice urged council to pursue restaurant tenants to replace the former Kookas Restaurant and said the repairs are an important step toward reactivating the downtown site.
Next steps: staff to issue an RFP for a site operator and oversee repair work funded by the appropriation.
