County offers $859,000; Rialto council approves solar lighting for part of Cactus Trail

San Bernardino County Supervisor Joe Baca Jr. presented an $859,000 donation intended to fund solar pedestrian lighting along a portion of Rialto’s Cactus Trail, and the City Council voted to accept the funding and move forward with installation.
Supervisor Baca said the grant would fund lights from Baseline to Etowanda to improve safety and nighttime access, particularly during darker months. Staff presentation described prior trail improvements completed in 2023 (1.5-mile class I trail) and said the solar lighting would enhance safety and extend trail use.
Council members thanked community members Kathy and Terry Thompson for raising the concern. The council’s motion approved accepting the donation and authorizing staff to proceed with project implementation and maintenance arrangements.
Next steps: staff will coordinate activation of lights with utility partners and present a maintenance plan to council as construction steps proceed.
