The West Noble School Corporation board voted to authorize the district safety director to carry a firearm on school property, the board chair said during Monday's meeting.
The board discussed the measure before the vote, with the chair saying the authorization is contingent on the safety director maintaining required qualifications and proficiency. "Yeah. I think that's what we should do," the chair said when asked whether certifications would be maintained.
Board members framed the authorization as an additional resource rather than a replacement for other safety measures. One member said the presence of a qualified safety director carrying a firearm could reduce response time in an emergency: "It's just another another opportunity for it to be there," the chair said. Members also noted that if the safety director leaves the position, the board can revisit the authorization on a case-by-case basis.
The board moved and seconded the authorization and the chair called the question; the motion carried. The vote was recorded by voice and the chair acknowledged the outcome.
The decision follows the district's ongoing safety-plan updates, which include adding an AED to an outdoor education area the superintendent identified as currently lacking one. The board did not provide a public tally of votes for the authorization beyond the chair's call that those in favor should indicate so.
