Howell said the union has signaled interest in discussing the sick bank and potential insurance changes, and added that the union may bring any member of the bargaining unit to the table. "The union are only bargaining for the teachers, not other groups," Howell said, adding the district typically includes at least one board member and several administrators at bargaining sessions.
Howell invited public comment and offered to collect emailed suggestions sent to the district; she said submissions marked for the budget will be shared with the board, and those about the contract will be shared with the union.
No formal negotiations or votes occurred during the hearing; the discussion served to meet the statutory requirement that a public hearing be held before negotiations begin. The district said formal bargaining will start on Sept. 23, 2024, and continue until an agreement is reached and ratified by the teachers’ association and the school board.
