South Central Community School Corp. named a DOE Educational Excellence award winner; receives STEM grant

South Central Community School Corporation will be recognized by the Indiana Department of Education for educational excellence and will receive a $25,000 award, a district administrator told the board on Nov. 20.
The administrator said the district was selected for excellence in professional learning and leadership development, one of seven award categories, and credited the district's work on summer professional development, PLCs and other teacher supports. "Missus Camrath really tackled the professional learning and leadership development," the administrator said.
The official also said the award is supported by philanthropic donations and that the school corporation will receive $25,000 at the DOE gala in Indianapolis on Nov. 21. The district also announced a STEM integration grant of $12,500 to support work toward national STEM certification at the high school.
Principals' reports provided local context for instruction and activities. Principal Mr. Kimball reported that the district's iLearn checkpoint results showed many grade levels at or above state averages and noted staff reassignments in special education and pre-K to cover a recent leave. Principal Mr. Mills reported athletics schedules, upcoming concerts and a community mattress fundraiser he described as "just shy of $2,000," with part of the proceeds paid back to student sellers and the remainder allocated to student activities.
During administrative discussion, leaders described a personnel timing issue: because a hire/approval at another district has timing constraints, a staff resignation and a recommended promotion (Mrs. Gates to full-time pre-K) will be handled once the other district completes its approval process; administration said the personnel recommendation will appear at the December meeting or at a special meeting if needed.
The board did not take formal action on the awards (recognition) during the meeting beyond accepting the administrative report.
