Public commenters urge board to delay blanket administrator raises as board tables $3,300 increase

Public commenters at the North Harrison Com School Corp July 20 meeting urged the board to delay a blanket administrator salary increase until contract timing and staffing issues are addressed.
Ashley Black, a parent and public commenter, praised a recent school auction but said the event highlighted waste and urged administration to create an inventory process for maintenance purchases. She then pressed the board on compensation decisions: "In the past 14 months, we have had 19 teachers and 19 instructional assistants resigned from this school," she said, and argued that administrators — who have individual contracts — should not receive a blanket raise between contract negotiations.
Jordan Black, another commenter, said breakfast prices appear to be rising after a prior grant-funded free breakfast program and also urged that administrator raises be considered individually rather than applied across all administrators.
Board members acknowledged the staffing concerns and noted prior investments in teacher pay. Superintendent Freed said the district had directed approximately $1,000,000 toward teacher master's programs and that the corporation had recently taken steps to meet state expenditure requirements for salaries and benefits. Nevertheless, board members said they needed more time to review the administrator proposal and its timing relative to contract cycles.
A motion to table the proposed $3,300 increase for all corporation administrators passed 4–1. Members said the tabled motion is intended to allow further review and, if necessary, a special executive session to examine contract timing and compensation details before any action is taken.
The board did not take additional action on administrator raises at the meeting; follow-up was assigned to administration for further review.
