Board organizes for 2025: officers elected, $2,000 salary and counsel named

At its Jan. 7 organizational meeting, the Michigan City Area Schools board administered oaths to new and reelected trustees, elected officers including a president and vice president, approved a $2,000 board salary and per diem under Indiana law, and appointed legal counsel and several liaisons.
The Board of School Trustees held its organizational meeting Tuesday and administered the oath of office to newly elected and reelected trustees before electing officers and approving administrative designations.
At the start of the meeting the presiding officer recorded that all members were present and the Clerk administered the oath of office to trustees, who swore to support the U.S. and Indiana constitutions and to faithfully execute the duties of their office.
The board then conducted nominations and voice votes for officer positions. The Clerk nominated Corley for board president; the board approved the nomination by voice vote. The Chair nominated Thomas Demkowski for vice president; that nomination was also approved. Jenny Lee Peterson (transcript: "Jenny Lee Peterson Peterson Hanes") was nominated and approved as board secretary.
The board discussed the treasurer role and noted that tradition has been to assign the post to the district chief financial officer, but the CFO position is currently vacant. The board approved a motion formalizing a recommendation that the person later appointed as CFO be nominated to serve as treasurer, rather than naming a treasurer immediately.
Trustee Tracy Haas was approved as deputy treasurer. Anna Dee was elected executive secretary, and the board appointed Miss Stark as parliamentarian. The board also named Mister Christian as its legislative liaison to the Indiana School Boards Association.
The trustees approved the 2025 meeting dates and established a committee to open tablet bids comprising the treasurer, deputy treasurer and executive secretary, with the associate superintendent designated as an alternate.
On compensation, the board voted to approve a $2,000 salary for board members and to adopt the board per diem consistent with Indiana Code 20-26-4-7. The board also approved Bill Kaminski as legal counsel and appointed liaisons to economic redevelopment (Mister Demkowski) and to the Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department (Ginny Lee).
The Chair adjourned the organizational meeting and reminded members the next regular meeting is scheduled for the last Tuesday of this month.
