Chelsea superintendent outlines snow‑day decision process, urges families to update contact info

Mike Kopulka, superintendent of the Chelsea School District, said the final decision to close schools for winter weather “resides with me,” and outlined the factors staff monitor when making that call.
Kopulka said the district begins monitoring road and route conditions overnight and into the morning and gathers on‑the‑ground input from assistant superintendent Mr. Kemming, transportation and maintenance teams before deciding. "We start monitoring road conditions overnight and early into the morning of a potential cancellation," he said. He noted the district covers about 120 square miles and considers snow accumulation, icy conditions, wind chill, visibility and the safety limits of district buses and staff who travel from across the region. He also said the district coordinates with neighboring schools in Washtenaw, Jackson and Livingston counties to align decisions where possible.
Kopulka urged families who did not receive today's closure notification to contact their student's school and update contact information in PowerSchool so they receive future emails, calls or texts.
