Chelsea School District sets three goals on graduate competencies, safety and K–8 literacy

Superintendent Mike Kopulka said the Chelsea School District established three goals for the year that align with the district’s strategic plan: strengthening the district’s portrait of a graduate, completing school safety upgrades and bolstering mental-health supports, and improving literacy outcomes in grades K–8.
On the portrait of a graduate, Kopulka said every grade level from Young 5 through 12 will have at least one key learning experience designed to help students practice collaboration, creativity and critical thinking and to give families time to reflect on learning. He cited existing examples such as community meetings at North and South and senior exit interviews at Chelsea High School.
On safety, Kopulka said the district will complete tier 1 security upgrades at every school, including new visitor check-in systems and additional exterior cameras, and will create a framework to better connect students and families with mental-health resources inside the district and in the wider community.
On literacy, Kopulka said the district aims to increase by at least 10 percentage points the share of students meeting their growth targets in K–8 reading, emphasizing targeted support for students identified as at-risk through MTSS and those with individualized education plans. He said the district will provide periodic progress updates throughout the year.
