Bedford school leaders express condolences, plan community support after student Gwen Smith—2019s death

Board members and district leaders used the meeting—2019s closing remarks to offer condolences and outline supports after the recent death of student Gwen Smith.

"What's happened in in this community over the last two weeks has just been heart wrenching," Superintendent Carl said, thanking staff and community members and noting a planned community event at the stadium intended to provide the family and community an opportunity for closure. He said the district—2019s priority is offering resources and support to students and families as they grieve.

Board President Amy read a prepared condolence statement: "I would also like to express my condolences to the family and friends of Gwen Smith." She urged the community to continue supporting young people as they leave for college and other transitions.

Several board members repeated condolences and recognized the effect on students who were classmates of the deceased. One board member noted the ties through band and athletics and said the loss has been especially painful for peers who graduated with the student.

Administrators said the district will continue to provide resources and staff support for students and families in the coming weeks and months; officials encouraged community members to offer care and to attend the stadium event. The meeting adjourned following the remarks.
